Workshop Descriptions
Waltz 101 Workshop: Folk Waltz is about the connection… to the tune, to your feet and your partner! Learn the essentials, guided by Cawood Fitzhugh in a Beginner experience workshop. Recorded music available for open waltz of all experience levels following.
Go with the Flow Contras–Relaxed and Elegant Dances:Not every great dance has to be complicated. In this session we’ll savor smooth, flowing contras that emphasize connection, phrasing, and effortless movement. Come enjoy elegant choreography that lets you relax into the music and simply go with the flow. All experience levels.
Challenging Contras: Ready to stretch your contra brain a bit? This session explores intriguing choreography, satisfying transitions, and dances that reward attentive partnering and musical awareness. Designed for experienced dancers who enjoy a bit of complexity while keeping the flow and joy of the dance. Advanced skill level, common moves will not be taught.
Contra Skills Workshop– “Level up your Contra game”: Join Brian Hamshar to explore the finer points of contra style with an eye toward becoming an above-average dance partner, from consent, courtesy and tactile signaling to some flourishes. There will be time for Q&A and requests, and we may also try some basic swapping, etc. Expect skills demos and practice mixed with plenty of dancing to fun recordings!
English Country Dance Session: A session of accessible English country dances for the familiar and unfamiliar dancer. All dances will be taught and called positionally by Jenna Simpson, to music by Mike Dunn and Rya Martin. All Experience Levels welcome.
East Coast Swing Workshop– Beyond the Basics!: Review the basics and learn some fun moves to spice up your dance! Taught by Catherine Farmer with assistance from Page Ghaphery, you can check out the kinds of moves you will learn in this video!
Locations Around the “Old School House”
Arents Hall
The upstairs ballroom. Accessible from grand stairs at the front entryway and a stairwell at the back, near the gym. Please keep our dance hall clear of trip hazards by storing excess items on the shelves in the Library or the break room to the right of the grand stairway.
Gymnasium
Gym Footwear Restrictions: No hard soled or street shoes are permitted in the Gymnasium. Clean sneakers are recommended. Dance socks, to cover the balls of your shoes and reduce friction, will be available.
The gym is located on the first floor at the back of the building (down split-level stairs).
Library
The Library is on the first floor, to the left of the entry hall and registration desk. Personal items such as coats and shoes may be stored on the shelves in the Library to keep our dance hall clear of trip hazards.
Dining Hall
The Dining Hall is on the first floor, to the right of the entry hall and registration desk.
Bathrooms
Three single stall, all gender bathrooms are available off of the entry hall: two on the left, beyond the registration desk, one at the very front, immediately to the right of the entry door. A Women only bathroom is available at the back of the Dining Hall.
